Creative Flow: Yoga and Writing with Julie Peters

Join writer and yoga teacher Julie Peters for an exploration into how yoga can spark your creativity. We will move through a playful but accessible Vinyasa flow to slow our brainwaves down into the Alpha state, where creative thought comes fast and furious. Then we will slow down and get contemplative in some deep Yin yoga poses. Explore a journaling practice, hear some beautiful poems, and see what comes out of you. Sharing is welcome but never, ever required! All levels.

Saturday, November 8th 2014, 1:00-3:00pm

Yoga for Feminists with Julie Peters

Are feminism and yoga mutually exclusive? Or are they obvious best friends? Does yoga support gender discrimination? Can it be empowering for women? What about for men? What’s with all the sex scandals, anyway? Is there a place for critical thinking within the magical land of meditation and chaturanga?

In this series of workshops, we will take a look at yoga history, philosophy, mythology, and culture with a feminist lens, and ask ourselves where and how our feminism can fit into our yoga practice. The course will deepen our understanding of the roots of yoga and allow a space for critical thinking on some classical ideas within yoga. Discussion is welcome, all genders are invited, and every class will include a short lecture and a yoga asana practice.

Workshops are $35 each, once a month from December 2014 to March 2015. Come to as many as you like, but if you complete all four, you will get 8 hours of Continuing Education Units with Yoga Alliance and a Yoga for Feminists certificate. Link to the full course is here: http://oceanandcrow.ca/yogaforfeministsfullcourse

SESSION ONE: Yoga for Feminists: History, Authority, and Authenticity

What is “real” yoga? Who are the gatekeepers of the great knowledge of our yoga practice? Is Crow pose really 2000 years old? Where can we find authenticity in our practice as yogis and as feminists? Saturday December 6th, 2014 2:00-4:00pm $35 http://oceanandcrow.ca/yogaforfeministssessionone

SESSION TWO: Yoga Philosophy: Can Sacred Texts be Feminist?

What exactly are the basic tenets of yoga philosophy? Are we tapping into a religious or philosophical wisdom when we talk about Yamas and Niyamas? What does it mean to live a “yogic” life? Can we think critically about “sacred” philosophy? Is there an inherent feminism in any branch of yoga philosophy? Saturday January 17th, 2015, 2:00-4:00pm $35 http://oceanandcrow.ca/sessiontwoyogaphilosophy

SESSION THREE: Yoga and Mythology: Are Goddesses Inherently Feminist?

What are we saying when women call each other “goddesses”? Is goddess worship inherently feminist? Who are the characters in the Hindu pantheon that show up most often? Who might show up to help us as feminist yogis? If we look at the stories through a feminist lens, what might we find? Saturday February 21st, 2015, 2:00-4:00pm $35 http://oceanandcrow.ca/sessionthreeyogaandmythology

SESSION FOUR: Yoga and Culture: Marketing Mindfulness in Bikinis

What images come to mind when you think of yoga? Why is there relatively little representation in terms of gender, race, and body type in yoga marketing? What is being sold? How does this represent the values of yoga as compared to our general cultural and social values? Is there a difference between yoga the practice and yoga culture? How can we participate in that as feminists? Saturday March 21st, 2015, 2:00-4:00pm $35 http://oceanandcrow.ca/sessionfouryogaandculture

Yoga for Feminists with Julie Peters

Are feminism and yoga mutually exclusive? Or are they obvious best friends? Does yoga support gender discrimination? Can it be empowering for women? What about for men? Is yoga women’s work? How can we look at the philosophies and methodologies that underpin yoga culture in the West through a feminist lens? What’s with all the sex scandals, anyway? Is there a place for critical thinking within the magical land of meditation and chaturanga?

Feminism is that which resists any system that oppresses a person based on their gender. It can also be a useful framework for thinking critically about the kinds of structures we take for granted within the popular Western practice of yoga on the mat, in the studio, and in the marketing materials.

In this workshop, we will look at some of the classical stories, philosophies, and teaching methodologies of yoga and have some open discussion around them. Then we will move it all through our bodies with a delicious all levels yoga practice.

 Saturday, June 21st, 2:00-5:00pm, $35: register here: http://eastsideyoga.ca/node/1164

Word Has It: Poetry at the In The House Festival

I’m pretty excited to have a chance to perform poetry alongside some of my favourite spoken word artists at the 2014 In The House Festival, which involves putting on shows in people’s houses (living rooms, kitchens, gardens) in the Commercial Drive area. The Festival in general involves all kinds of art–dance, puppetry, music, theatre, and of course poetry. Come see me, Zaccheus Jackson, Scruffmouth, RC Weslowski, and Barbara Adler in a show called Word Has It on Sunday June 8th at 7:00pm in a house at 1940 Napier St. Tickets are $10-$15 for each show, but you can also get a festival pass and see a bunch of other stuff too. Pillow Talks: East Van Poetry Salon with Chris Gilpin and Julie Peters

Come sit on the floor on bolster cushions (or BYOP–Bring Your Own Pillow) and read poetry to each other. The only rule is that it can’t be your own poetry, it has to be someone else’s. We will chat about the poetry, learn about each other’s inspirations, and perhaps get a little insight into your own writing along the way.

Julie Peters and Chris Gilpin created the East Van Poetry Salon to create opportunities for writers to talk about writing in different ways, informally and quasi-academically. This event will include the kind of refreshments you can swill in a glass and pontificate over.

Saturday, November 30th, 7:30pm onwards. Refreshments will be available!

By Donation.

Storytelling On and Off the Mat Yoga Retreat to the North Cascades

Imagine this: you are in a beautiful space surrounded by old growth forests, wildflower meadows, and glacier-fed lakes in early October, just as the leaves start to turn beautiful colours. Outside, there are hikes, canoes for paddling in, and nothing but the sounds of birds and the winds in the wildflowers.

Wander inside and soak up some poetry and yoga classes that rinse the body, mind, and heart all at once. Get out your notebook and learn the secrets of a great yoga class as a practitioner or as a teacher.

Sound good? On the weekend of October 4-6th, I will be leading a weekend retreat near Diablo Lake at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Centre with Renton, WA studio Maya Whole Health. I am offering several yoga classes in both Vinyasa and Yin styles, with two lectures, one on employing the structure of a narrative to your yoga class for home practice or teaching, and the other on discovering your voice and learning to translate your own body’s vocabulary. Plus delicious food, wine, and beer, a naturalist led hike, and a screening of Wayne’s World (naturally). $480 for the whole shebang, just a 3 hour drive from Vancouver or Seattle.

Creative Flow: Yoga and Writing for Just Write Vancouver Meetup Group Writing Weekend

I am looking forward to offering a workshop specifically for the Vancouver Just Write Meetup Group! This 2 hour workshop will be a part of a weekend long urban writing retreat with Just Write Vancouver.

We will explore how yoga can help spark creativity from your body and help you to connect sensation and emotion with language. When we practice yoga, specifically the flowing Vinyasa style, we manufacture the alpha brain state which is the creative brainwave state of the writing groove. We will explore the stories in our bones, and tell a few of them, especially as we slow down towards the end of the workshop and listen more deeply to our bodies in Yin yoga poses. The practice is for any level of yoga and writing, and everyone is welcome. Please bring a yoga mat, any props you have (a sweater or scarf can do in a pinch!) and a writing journal.

Cost: $30 ($25 for Just Write Meetup Group Members)

Saturday, September 7th, 9:30-11:30am

Suite Genius, 210-1737 West 3rd Avenue (near Burrard St)

Not a part of the Meetup? Join here:  http://www.meetup.com/JustWriteVancouver/

Creative Flow: Writing and Yoga Progressive

This November 2012, we will explore Creative Flow in four separate sessions that explore the ways yoga and creativity interact from different perspectives. You’ll hear lots of great poetry, you’ll move, you’ll write, and you might even share if you want to (no pressure!)

Bring a journal, comfortable clothes, water, and if you’d like to bring your own mat please do.

Schedule:

Week 1: Inspirare: Breath and Creativity
Learn basic forms of yogic breathing to open your lungs and oxygenate your body. Learn the intimate connections of the Vinyasa: breath and movement connected, to slow down your brainwaves into Alpha state, the brainwave we enter into when we are working creatively.

Week 2: Turn Your Wheels
In this introduction to Chakra theory, we will focus specifically on the throat, and energetic centre that must be opened in order to let your voice be heard. We will move through a flow practice focused on opening the throat and heart so we can let the words flow onto the page.

Week 3: Going Deep: Yin Yoga
This will be a very slow, deep practice that will open up the stuck places in your connective tissue, scar tissue, and, from Chinese Medicine perspective, your meridian lines. This is a very meditative, slow practice, and will involve more writing.

Week 4: The Play of Perspective
This practice will turn you upside down–figuratively if not literally. We will shake up the system and bump up against our comfort zones, using yoga postures, play, energetic work, and writing prompts.
